Alhajaaj الحجاج (Pilgrim’s)
The Holy shrine of Imam Reza, Mashhad, Iran.
You need to know a little about who the man is whose tomb we visited in Mashhad, Iran where this image was taken. I have links to more details highlighted. Imam Reza was a descendant of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, the eighth Imam in Twelver Shia Islam. His tomb is Iran’s equivalent of Mecca and many, many pilgrims travel to the shrine from and around Iran. We were honoured to be able to bare witness to one of the holiest days for the shrine, the anniversary celebration of Reza’s birthday. Not a lot of non-Muslims get enter and experience the shrine little own to be present for this holy occasion. It was an incredibly privileged experience. I have included some more images from this memorable day below.
This image received a "Highly Commended" for the "Mono Awards" in the "Australian Photography" magazine competition 2019.
