ئاسماندىكى ئەرۋاھ ماھىرى (Ghost rider in the sky)
On the road to Turpan, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China
We were very privileged to travel through China’s Autonomous Region in 2018. Here is a part of the world that is changing rapidly and not for the better. Our guide through this part of the world was a beautiful young Uyghur lady called “Gulnigar” To be truthful, I fear for her and her family now. At the time we were there she had hoped to be able to travel but, the local government had taken her passport and were not allowing her to have it back. As we were travelling through the desolate countryside of the Dabancheng district, I took this picture just as a memory of how barren the landscape really was. It was only after I realised, I had captured “Gul’s” refection against the window. ئاسماندىكى ئەرۋاھ ماھىرى translates back to a ghost against the sky. Just as the Uyghurs are becoming ghosts. I have included a photo of "Gul" and two other images of Uyghurs. A people and culture under threat.
