On the road to The Bezeklik Caves, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China
This was one of the most surprising finds while in this region. Between the “thousand buddha caves” (a slight exaggeration being that there are only about 50) and the “Damo soil art museum” stands the abandoned set to the 2017 movie “A Journey to the West” a story about Monkey. For those that don’t know the Monkey legion, it’s about a pilgrimage of a Buddhist priest and three banished animal gods from heaven, one of them a monkey who go to retrieve holy scriptures from India. In true Chinese style, they have created a Disney style attraction theme park out in the middle of nowhere featuring a huge Monkey statue. Story being that the “real” Monkey fought a demon there and created one of China’s hottest places, “Fire Mountain”. Temperatures there can boil eggs buried in the sand in summer.
